Researchers from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) in Australia and the Chinese Academy of Sciences conducted a joint study analyzing over two million heat data points from oceans.
The study revealed that previous research primarily focused on ocean surface temperatures. Scientists found that 80% of heat waves occurring below 100 meters depth happen independently of surface events.
Furthermore, they emphasized that deep ocean heat waves are linked to vortices, which also affect oxygen levels in the water.
The researchers noted that heat events in the oceans are becoming increasingly frequent due to global warming, leading to devastating ecological and socioeconomic impacts.
They believe this new understanding will aid in the prediction of future heat events.
The findings were published in the journal "Nature."
